Patty Mankowski, a nurse practitioner in the emergency room at the University of Illinois hospital and a paramedic for the Chicago Fire Department, knows first-hand that there has always been a large opioid crisis in the Chicago area.

But she has noticed another disturbing trend — the numbers have spiked since the pandemic began.

“The numbers of overdoses and calls about alcohol abuse are all over the board, it’s not a specific age or demographic. It is everywhere throughout the Chicagoland area,” Mankowski said.

Towards the middle of March 2020, the Black Non-Latinx and White Non-Latinx communities are the first communities to spike in positive covid-19 rates.

However by mid April, the Latinx community surpasses both the White Non-Latinx and Black Non-Latinx communities. By April 30, 2020, the Latinx community had 559 positive test results.

It should be noted the second highest COVID-19 rates came from those who did not disclose their race/ethnicity. The Unknown Race/Ethnicity community had 354 more cases on April 30, 2020.
